About this deal

For more details, please consult the latest information provided by Royal Mail's International Incident Bulletin. With a childhood right out of The Virgin Suicides--you'd think it was about the only book I've ever read based on how much I'm referencing it lately--what's not to love? Things many of us can relate to regarding family life, relationships, run-ins with strangers and that sort of juicy stuff. This leaves one other area which Sedaris has mined fruitfully in previous books - anecdotes about his family. Having read all about rich and fabulous Sedaris in Calypso, it was nice to read not always so rich but still as quirky and hilarious Sedaris in this one.

My sister's the type who religiously watches the fear segments of her local Eyewitness News broadcasts, retaining nothing but the headline. And when work got like WAAAAAAY too worky the other day and I was afraid I was going to full out pull a Milton . I just wanted to slap the shit out of him and his idiosyncratic family/neighbors/and everyone else he was talking about. To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. Judging by the number of people showing up for his readings here in San Francisco, and its lengthy sojourn on The New York Times bestseller list, it obviously did pretty well commercially. This year I didn't listen to anything while decking the halls and when it was time for treat making other library patrons finally got wise and had all of the copies checked out so I went for this oldie but goodie as a backup. Hardly surprising - any author would lead with the funniest material; this collection has occasional flashes of wit, but never reaches the 'laugh-out-loud' quality of the earlier books. Sedaris is so great at showing that most of our love for each other doesn’t lie in our similarities, but in the strength of our shared history and our sheer will to maintain the relationship.

It's a bit like the combination of sweet and salty that once you've read one short story you just want more and more. But at the same time, David Sedaris is cynical, funny and does the best job of explaining his crazy family and all his neurotic thoughts. He knew how to plan a meal but displayed a remarkable lack of patience when it came time for the actual cooking. But he has saved me from singing the blues on a number of days and lifted me from boredom on many more, so ‘hero’ he shall be named.

Anyway, I keep telling him we don’t live in Amsterdam so he doesn’t have anything to worry about, but I think it’s pretty obvious by the look on his face that he doesn’t believe me . Still, I can say that I didn’t really like this book, as the narrator, Sedaris, seemed really down, and his stories were blah. I found Dress Your Family in Corduroy and Denim to be less serious than the other book I read and a lot more lighthearted as far as stories went. That was romantic, or would have been had he rushed to my side rather than stepping over my body to fetch the dustpan.
