About this deal

The atmosphere of bustling Tokyo was palpable and coupled with Grothaus' writing style a delight to read. I don't know where I was expecting the story to go, but some of the revelation really took me by surprise. Thank you to NetGalley, Independent Publishers Group and Michael Grothaus for a copy in exchange for an honest review.

There is also plenty of action, and plenty (especially a visit to the Peace Park in Hiroshima) to give pause for thought. The world didn’t seem unrealistic to me and there was so much mystery and YA intertwined that I actually grew to love their strange, futuristic world! So too was the setting of the scene, there was no better location than Tokyo – which even today to Western minds seems advanced and otherworldly yet steeped in tradition at the same time.Neotnia and Inu are androids so highly advanced, they're indistinguishable from actual humans and dogs. Challenging, enlightening, and terrifying, TRUST NO ONE asks the question other people are too scared to: what happens when you can no longer believe your own eyes? This book crosses over so many genres and weaves so intricately between stitching invisible cords through it’s amazing pages. Reviews“The book’s suspenseful twists tie the aftermath of the bombing of Hiroshima to themes concerning the roles of scientists in either tearing or healing humanity…an arresting novel.

In short, it is a fantastic mash-up of different genres and elements, and a story you won’t soon forget with a cast of characters that will win over your heart long before that final page. I almost didn't read it as, when I read the synopsis I, wrongly as it turns out, assumed it was a romance. It follows our main character and narrator John, a 17 year old American who magazines refer to as a “boy genius”. This is my first time reading a book written by Michael Grothaus and most definitely will not be my last. All of it creates a beautifully woven book on what it means to be human, relationships, the potential consequences of technological advances, and dreams of a better world.

John is a 17-year old American teenager, a ‘boy genius’ of quantum coding, who recently arrived in Tokyo to sign a deal with Sony. A damaged young man meets an enigmatic waitress in a Tokyo café , and they embark on a journey that will change everything .Plus it’s 30-odd years into the future and people are still flying across the world to sign contracts? It is hard to review ‘Beautiful Shining People’ as it can not be pigeonholed neatly into a genre as it is part YA but it deals with distinctly adult themes, it's a ‘sci-fi’ novel but yet it isn't as it's only set 30 years in the future, its kind of a thriller but its also a deep dive into relationships, friendships and humanity. Not a man you'd want to cross, for obvious reasons, but he has his own emotional past that is brought to the surface, one which makes his stern demeanour all the more understandable.
