Matty's passion is very explicit in this book, whether in the recipes or in the personal notes before each one. This is my third year with Abrams Book’s Dinner Party group and as always, they seem to have a fantastic lineup of cookbooks to expand your horizons and tastebuds.

Matheson’s celeriac broth, while it takes some time is so rich and earthy that it gives loads of flavor to anything, not just vegetarian dishes. When the heavy tome arrived, I was rather overwhelmed but quickly got sucked into the gorgeous photographs of food and stories about life, food, and cooking. While I normally prefer glossy, because they’re more resistant to spills and tears, I think that in this case they add to the vintage-ish look of this book. As much as I wanted the dramatic-looking romaine halves floating in a lovely broth, I had to consider the teens and knew they’d not eat it like that, so I chopped it and added as a garnish much as we do with pozole. I'd totally expect that he cooks like this at home given his history in French restaurants like Le Select and La Palette, but I think the majority of his audience wouldn't see these as comforting, home style dishes and they almost certainly wouldn't associate them with the kind of personality they expect from Matty.You’ll still encounter some things like leek and mackerel terrine that wouldn’t look out of place on a posh restaurant menu and with multiple elements that need bringing together and require some skill to do so. Despite the title and nice images, these are not recipes that will be rotated into my routine home cooking. Ok, it really is edible but the photo in the cookbook has it in this narrow container that you couldn't scoop much of it out, or at least not get all seven layers on one chip. A comprehensive guide to cooking at home with ideas and techniques from a top restaurant chef, covering everything from bread to cake with dips, dumplings, curries, pies and much else in between.
