The book tells the story of a close knit Irish community which has settled in Liverpool and most of the men work at the dockside. They all nodded as they flicked their cigarette ash onto the pavement and took another long self-righteous puff. On the day one of the O'Prey boys from number twenty-four was sent to prison, the mothers ran to gather around Maura's door, each carrying a cup of tea and a chair out onto the street to sit and gossip, watching the children play. Disraeli, of course, but also Ellen Wilkinson and Maurice Edelmann, Douglas Hurd and Edwina Currie, and many others have tried with mixed results. This secret is so dangerous that her mother, Maura, and the redoubtable Kathleen, her best friend Nellie's grandmother, decide the girls must be spirited away quietly to Ireland to await the birth of the baby. Dorries describes the books as "a mishmash of the people, personalities and events which were the backcloth to my life when growing up in Liverpool".

Here the values of rural Irish communities, where whole families can live for a week on a pan of boiled nettles and a hen's foot, are transposed into mean streets of two-up, two-downs with an outhouse in the yard and Granada TV on the sideboard. To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. On Christmas morning Kitty Doherty gives birth to her baby - who is immediately taken away for adoption in America. Maura was a strong character portrayed as a very capable woman who did her best for all the children in the area. It was in so doing that I came across a large number of 5* review ratings and had started to question my judgement.

Somehow, the families of the Four Streets fail to notice the manifest signs of evil that are narrated to us – but then, when your narrator speaks in a mix of inexplicable imagery (a child watches a strand of hair move around like “an overlarge windscreen wiper”, even though we are later told that no one on the Four Streets has a car) and lines that read like clippings from Wikipedia (“maternal death from childbirth was the biggest single killer of young women, particularly those from impoverished backgrounds like their own”) perhaps it is understandable that the simple folk of the Four Streets would miss the subtle signs of raging pederasty. The woman gathering together to cook a huge stew so all the kids would eat that night when times were hard. This is a historical fiction book about life in the 1950s for Irish Catholic immigrants in Liverpool. Pink uniforms are described in this book but it's not clear if she is wearing one or not, but assuming that since this book description says 1950s and the first Lovely Lane book says 1953 it's a little bit hard to credit her going from unprofessional potential probationer nurse to sister that everyone is terrified of in 3 years. The men work on the docks for a pittance and the women stay home, bear children and try to stretch the household budget to fill the bellies of their growing families.I personally warmed to most of the characters, even Alice as her issues in life were pretty hard for a woman in the 50's to deal with.
